Selecting a Tasbih
The Tasbih: A Journey of Reflection and Luxury
From the vibrant markets of Morocco to the serene landscapes of Southeast Asia, the Tasbih/Tasbeeh (also known as the Misbaha or Subha) is a timeless presence in the Muslim home. Far more than a religious artifact, it is a companion on a deeply personal spiritual journey—a tangible tool for dhikr, the remembrance of God.
At Massar, we believe that because these beads assist in such a sacred act, they should be crafted with an artistry that reflects their purpose.
The Anatomy of a Misbaha: Design with Purpose
As we use genuine semi-precious gemstones, Massar Tasbihs have a signature weight and cooling touch that distinguishes them from synthetic alternatives. Every element of a Massar Tasbih is thoughtfully engineered to enhance focus during prayer and meditation:
-
The Beads (99 or 33): Traditionally, a Misbaha features 99 beads to honor the 99 Names of Allah. Our 33-bead versions offer a more portable path to the same devotion, cycled three times to complete the count. Each bead provides a rhythmic, meditative flow to your recitation.
-
The Dividers (Sections of Stillness): These distinct markers are placed every 11 or 33 beads. They act as tactile cues, allowing you to track your progress by touch alone, ensuring your concentration remains unbroken.
-
The Imam Bead (The Guiding Stone): Also called the Alif, is traditionally an elongated centerpiece marking the beginning and end of each cycle. It is often the most decorative element, serving as a focal point for the entire strand. In our 33-bead bead bracelet this is either represented as a charm or tassel.
-
The Tassel (A Touch of Elegance): Our tassels—crafted from silk, cotton, or fine metalwork—are more than decorative. They provide a vital counterweight, giving the Tasbih a balanced, intentional feel in the hand.
Choosing Your Fit: Handheld vs. Wearable
We have engineered our collections to suit two distinct lifestyles of devotion. Understanding the cord is essential to choosing the right piece:
-
The Handheld Collection (Fixed Cord): Our traditional 33 and 99-bead Tasbihs are strung on a high-durability, fixed (non-stretch) cord. This provides a sturdy, classic feel for focused prayer. These pieces are designed to be held in the hand (33-bead), worn as a necklace (99-bead), or kept safely in a pouch.
-
The Bracelet Collection (Premium Stretch): For the modern lifestyle, our 33-bead bracelets are crafted on a premium elastic stretch cord. This allows you to wear your beads on your wrist, offering a seamless transition from daily life to moments of constant remembrance. Our bracelets are adorned with charms or small tassels to ensure a touch of elegance but also functionality and wearability.
The Massar Standard: Where Quality Meets Devotion
While any beads can fulfill a function, a Massar Tasbih is crafted as a cherished heirloom. We elevate the spiritual experience through uncompromising material standards:
-
Semi-Precious Gemstones: We specialize in Grade-AAA semi-precious stones—from the deep celestial blue of Crazy Blue Lace Agate to the grounding strength of Black Onyx and the serene clarity of Amethyst.
-
Organic & Natural Materials: We source precious materials like aromatic Sandalwood, rare Agarwood (Oud), and radiant Amber. These organic elements are prized for the unique patina and subtle scent they develop over a lifetime of use.
A Legacy in Your Hands
The Tasbih is a profound bridge between practical tradition and exquisite craftsmanship. Whether you choose a simple string of sacred wood or a lavish collection of rare gemstones, a Massar Tasbih is a testament to mindfulness—a piece of wearable art designed for reflection, peace, and connection.
Tasbih Sizing & Style Guide
To measure your wrist for a bracelet, wrap a flexible tape measure or string snugly (not tightly) around the bone, mark the overlap, and measure that length with a ruler. Add 0.5–1 inch (1.25–2.5 cm) to this number for comfort. Average wrist sizes are 6–7" for women and 7–8" for men.
A Quick Note on Fit
-
The 99 Necklace & 33 Handhelds: These are designed with a small gap between the beads. This is intentional; it allows the beads to slide easily between your fingers during dhikr.
-
The Bracelets: These are strung "flush" (tightly) on premium elastic so they sit comfortably and look like jewelry on the wrist while remaining functional for counting.
